What to Expect
ERCP is performed under sedation. The endoscope is guided to the opening of the bile and pancreatic ducts, contrast dye is injected, and X-rays are taken. Stones can be removed, strictures dilated, and stents placed during the same procedure.
Preparation
You must fast for 6-8 hours before the procedure. Blood tests may be required beforehand. Tell your endoscopist about all medications, especially blood thinners.
Duration
The ERCP procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes.
After the Procedure
You will be monitored for 2-4 hours after the procedure. Someone must drive you home. You may experience mild abdominal discomfort or bloating. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe pain or fever.
